
Bears Sign Two Pitchers; Crampton Returns

NEWARK, NJ - August 4, 2007 - The First Half North Division Champion Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced they have agreed to terms with left-handed pitchers Steve Crampton and Mark Phillips. Both will be in uniform this evening as the Bears play game two of the three game series at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, while Phillips will be the starting pitcher. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
Crampton is beginning his second stint with the Bears having previously played for the team in 2004 and 2005. In 2004, the Paterson, NJ native and firefighter was named the Bears Pitcher of the Year after appearing in a team-high 46 games and compiling a 6-3 record with two saves and a 2.15 ERA. He allowed 43 base hits in 75.1 innings of work, while striking out 68 batters. In 2005, the former standout at William Paterson University appeared in 36 games out of the bullpen posting a 3-1 record with 38 strikeouts in 53.2 innings pitched. Crampton is entering his fourth professional season.
Phillips is entering his fifth professional season after originally being drafted in the first round, ninth overall, in the 2000 draft by the San Diego Padres. While playing for Lake Elsinore of the California League in 2002, the Hanover, PA native set career highs with ten wins, 28 games pitched, 26 starts, 148.1 innings pitched, and 156 strikeouts. He finished that season third in the league holding opposing batters to a .222 batting average.
