Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots have announced that right-handed pitcher Brian Tollberg has been signed by the Houston Astros organization.
Tollberg currently is among the Atlantic League leaders in pitching with a 10-2 record, a 2.30 ERA, and 51 strikeouts in 94 innings pitched in 14 games started. He is the first Patriots pitcher to reach the All-Star Break with ten wins in team history.
He was recently named the Atlantic League Pitcher Of The Month for June and an Atlantic League All-Star. Tollberg finished the month of June with a 4-1 record, a 3.21 ERA, 19 strikeouts, and two walks in five starts for Somerset.
Tollberg will report to the Astros Triple-A team in Round Rock next week after the Atlantic League All-Star Game in Atlantic City, NJ. He is the second Patriots starting pitcher to be signed by a Major League organization this season, with Derek Lee signing with the Texas Rangers in June.
"Brian has been pitching so well that it was only a matter of time before a Major League team signed him. He deserves the opportunity to get back to the Major Leagues and we wish him all the best," said Patrick McVerry, President/ General Manager of the Somerset Patriots Baseball Club.
Tollberg pitched in 58 Major League games with the San Diego Padres and struck out 182 batters in 307 innings pitched. In 2001, Tollberg went 10-4 for the Padres with a 4.30 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 19 games started.
Tollberg also has six seasons of Triple-A experience in the Milwaukee Brewers, Padres, and Colorado Rockies organizations. He has a minor league career 61-44 record, a 4.60 ERA, and 802 strikeouts in 205 games.
The Somerset Patriots are currently in a pennant race for the Atlantic League South Division First Half Championship. The Patriots have a 2.5 game lead over the Camden Riversharks with two games remaining before the All-Star Break.
The 2005 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will remain at home for the final two games of the first half of the season.
