Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, July 9-The Newark Bears equaled a team season-high by smashing four home runs in winning the opener of their doubleheader against the Lancaster Barnstormers, 10-3, Saturday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Newark.
Newark's Jose Herrera hit two of the home runs, his 8th and 9th of the season, to lead a ten-hit attack. His solo shot in the 2nd inning was the first run of the game; and his two-run blast in the 4th inning gave Newark an 8-0 lead. Herrera finished the game 2-3 with two home runs, a walk and 3 RBI.
Keith Maxwell hit a three-run home run, his 8th of the season, in the 3rd inning and finished the game 2-4 with the home runs, a double, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Wil Quintana clubbed his team-high 10th home run, a two-run blast, in the 5th inning.
Bears catcher Tom McGee had two hits, including a two-run single in the 2nd inning which gave the Bears a 3-0 lead at the time.
Right-hander Andy Zwirchitz (4-5) earned his second straight win for the Bears and his third in his last four starts. Zwirchitz struck out a season-high nine batters over six innings, allowing only three runs and five hits, with all three runs coming in the 5th inning. The big blow against Zwirchitz in the 5th was a two-run triple off the bat of Quincy Foster.
