Patriots win first half championship with ten inning win

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Atlantic City Surf 4-3 in ten innings before 5,885 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening to clinch the First Half Championship. Right fielder Ryan Radmanovich drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the tenth inning to win the game.

Patriots catcher Chris Eickhorst led off the bottom of the tenth inning with an infield single to the shortstop. Center fielder Jeremy Owens then bunted Eickhorst to second. After an intentional walk to second baseman Emiliano Escandon, first baseman Jeff Nettles drew a walk to load the bases. Radmanovich then won the game with a bases loaded walk.

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Shortstop Kevin Nicholson singled and would later come around to score on double play ball to the shortstop.

Atlantic City took the lead with two runs in the top of the third inning. Catcher Kevin McDonald singled and scored on a two-run home run by center fielder Jim Essian (2) to make the score 2-1 Surf.

Somerset tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Third baseman George Sandel doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Chris Eickhorst, and scored on a sacrifice fly by center fielder Jeremy Owens.

The Patriots regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Right fielder Ryan Radmanovich doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by designated hitter Ray Navarrete, and scored on an RBI single by left fielder Patrick Boran to make it 3-2.

The Surf tied the game up once again in the top of the sixth inning. Left fielder Al Benjamin doubled and scored on an RBI double by designated hitter Ozzie Timmons to make the score 3-3.

Patriots reliever David Elder (3-1) picked up the win with 1.2 scoreless innings pitched and three strikeouts. Surf reliever Francisco Villegas (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing an earned run in 2.2 innings pitched.

The 2005 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Sunday, July 10th with a 1:35 pm game against the Atlantic City Surf. Sunday 's game includes T-Shirts for the first 2,000 fans presented by Flemington Department Store. The game is also Beatles Invasion Day with a live band before and after the game. Fans can participate in the Somerset County Park Commission Autograph Session before the game and Kids Runs The Bases after the game in The Beez Foundation Diamond Derby.
