Hickory Crawdads News Release

Kannapolis, NC - The Hickory Crawdads rallied for the game-tying run with a 2-out single in the top of the 9th Monday night, but a 2-out passed ball in the bottom of the 10th allowed the winning run to score for the Kannapolis Intimidators resulting in a 5-4 loss for the 'Dads at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.

A game that began with a flurry of runs for both teams quickly shifted back to the pitchers in the middle frames, with the Crawdads entering the top of the 9th inning trailing the Intimidators 4-3. Ronald Guzman singled to start the frame before being pinch run for by Travis Demeritte. Two batters later, Michael De Leon lined a 2-out, RBI single to left to score Demeritte and tie the game at 4-4.

Fast forward to the 10th, and Kannapolis led off the inning with a single to center by Jacob Morris. Two outs later with Morris on third, Hickory reliever Jose Valdespina's 1-2 pitch sailed high and careened off of catcher Kellin Delgans glove, with the ensuing passed ball allowing Morris to come home and score the winning run for the final 5-4 score.

The game started off with a couple of first inning runs and a 2-0 lead for the 'Dads. De Leon began the game with a single to center before moving to second on an errant pickoff throw by Kannapolis starting pitcher Thad Lowry. Evan Van Hoosier then drove in De Leon with a RBI double inside the third base bag, while Deglan followed one out later with a double to right to plate Van Hoosier.

The Hickory lead wouldn't last the first inning however, as the Intimidators responded with three runs on four hits off of Crawdads pitcher Frank Lopez to take a 3-2 advantage. Back-to-back doubles by Danny Hayes and Jacob Morris brought in the Kannapolis runs, with Hayes driving in one and Morris plating two.

The Intimidators added to their lead in the 3rd, when Morris started the inning with another double before coming in one out later on a RBI sacrifice fly by Carl Thomore to stretch the score to 4-2. The Crawdads narrowed the deficit to 4-3 in the 6th without the benefit of a hit, with Deglan reaching on a walk, Jairo Beras on an error and Guzman on another walk before a wild pitch allowed Deglan to score from third.

Deglan finished the game 2-4 with a double, RBI, walk, and run scored, while Van Hoosier went 2-5 with a double and a RBI. Luis Marte also picked up a double in the game, going 2-4 with his two-base hit and a stolen base.

Kannapolis closer Matt Abramson (3-6) earned the win after initially blowing the save, with one run allowed on three hits, now walks and a strikeout over two innings pitched. Valdespina (2-2) took the tough loss for the Crawdads, allowing an unearned run on two hits and a strikeout over 1.2 IP.

The Crawdads (24-20) and Intimidators (24-20) are now exactly .500 against each other in 2014, with both teams sporting an 11-11 record. The 'Dads will look to bounce back in game two of the three game series Tuesday night at 7:05 pm.
