Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(Reading, PA) - The Reading Fightin Phils (11-14, 39-54) fell to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (11-14, 46-48) in 10 innings Saturday Night. The R-Phils left nine runners on base as the Rumble Ponies clinch the series victory and hold a 4-1 edge in this week's series.
David Parkinson was excellent, as he pitched a strong 6.2 innings in the start for Reading. Parkinson was just the second R-Phils starter to reach the seventh inning this year, the first coming from Griff McGarry on July 21st. The left hander struck out six and allowed only three hits, as well as leaving Binghamton hitless until the fifth.
The Fightin Phils struck first in the bottom of the second. Oliver Dunn led off with a double. Ethan Wilson followed up with a base knock to score Dunn and make it 1-0 Reading.
The Rumble Ponies got on the board in the top of the seventh. Rowdy Jordan got things going first with a double. Jose Peroza was next with a double of his own, scoring Jordan to tie the game up at one.
Parkinson's day would end after getting the next batter Agustin to pop out to third baseman Pedro Martinez. Newcomer Tommy McCollum came in for relief of Parkinson to get the next out and end the inning.
The Phils found themselves going into extra innings for the second time this series, after Cody Roberts hit into a double play to end the ninth. With JT Schwartz on second base to start, Jose Peroza led off with a single, moving Schwartz to third.
Agustin Ruiz then hit a soft ground ball to pitcher Adam Leverett. With Schwartz starting to make the charge home from third, Leverett chased down Schwartz, getting caught in a rundown for the out. Both runners would advance on the play. With runners on second and third, Hayden Senger squeezed a ground ball just past the diving glove of Martinez at third to score both runners and give the Ponies the 3-1 advantage.
This would be too much for the Fightins to come back from, as they fell to Binghamton 3-1 after 10 innings.
Núñez (W, 1-0) earned the win for Binghamton after two strong innings of relief, with Leverett (L, 0-2) suffering the loss for Reading. William Woods (S, 6) pitched a scoreless tenth for the Rumble Ponies.
