January 29, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

Dubuque used a 30-save performance from Lukas Parik and three points from Robert Cronin to beat Waterloo for an eighth straight time and clinch the 2020-21 Cowbell Cup. Max Burkholder's first USHL goal ended up being the game winner as the Saints skated to a 4-1 victory.

-The first period started off well for the Saints, as Ian Pierce scored his second goal of the season on a greasy play in front. It was the third time in four games against the Hawks this season in which the Saints scored first.

-Dubuque doubled their lead when Max Burkholder ripped a point shot past Charlie Glockner for his first USHL goal. Burkholder has been teasing the net for some time and was finally able to strike.

-The scoring from defensemen continued late in the first as David Gucciardi scored for the Hawks to cut the lead in half. Gucciardi's goal was his team leading 4th from a defenseman.

-Lukas Parik, in his USHL debut, made 16 stops in a busy first period.

-The second period looked a lot different for the Saints as they outshot the Black Hawks 12-5. However, it was Glockner's turn to stand up to the barrage. He stopped all 12 shots as the period ended the same way it started, with the Saints up 2-1.

-Dubuque gained the first power play of the game, late in the second period. Matt Savoie drew the call, but the Saints couldn't do much with the opportunity. Dubuque has struggled as of late on the man advantage.

-Parik continued his impressive debut through the final two periods, finishing the night with 30 saves and his first USHL win in his first start with Dubuque.

-The Saints clamped down defensively and in the final minute, added two goals to seal the victory. First, Kenny Connors scored on the empty net to make it 3-1. Waterloo took a late power play and shortly after Dubuque cashed in on a gorgeous passing play; Robert Cronin put it home.

-The win sealed the Cowbell Cup for Dubuque and gave the Saints their eighth straight win over the Black Hawks. It is the longest winning streak for either team against the other in the Tier-1 era.

-This was Dubuque's best defensive effort against the Hawks, allowing less than three goals for the first time in the season series. On the other side of things, Dubuque has now scored 21 goals in four meetings with Waterloo.

Up next, two games in Des Moines and 6pm tomorrow and 3pm Sunday.
