JUPITER, FL - Daytona was held to just four hits in their shutout loss on Thursday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. The Palm Beach Cardinals handed the Tortugas their fourth shutout defeat of the season, taking the rubber match 1-0.
The Cardinals scored the games only run in the last of the second off of LHP Wennington Romero. After Romero set down the first two hitters in the inning, Ryan McCarvel extended the frame with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and came around score on a Stefan Trosclair RBI base hit.
Daytona had the perfect opportunity to score in the seventh when they loaded up the bases with no outs, but a pair of Cardinal relievers worked around the threat and kept the Tortugas off the board thanks to a pop-out and a pair of strikeouts.
The Tortugas threatened again in the ninth, this time with two away. Taylor Trammell reached on a dropped third strike to extend the game, then moved into scoring position on an Ibandel Isabel single, but RHP Bryan Dobzanski buckled down and struck out Stuart Fairchild to end the game.
RHP Alex Fagalde (1-0) earned the win in his FSL debut. He surrendered just two hits in six shutout innings while striking out six and walking one. Romero (8-7) takes the loss. He allowed one run on five hits in five innings while striking out one and walking four. Dobzanski earned his first save, he tossed a scoreless ninth with three strikeouts.
Daytona will now head to St. Lucie to begin a series with the Mets on Friday. LHP Scott Moss (12-3) will get the ball for the Tortugas against LHP Anthony Kay (2-3, 2.83).
First pitch Friday is scheduled for 6:30 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:20 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
NOTES: The Tortugas fall to 0-34 when trailing after 8 innings... Daytona has lost 6 of their last 7 series finales... The Tortugas have now lost 9 straight series deciding games. Daytona is 2-10 in such games... RHP Alex Fagalde retired 14 Tortugas in a row at one point. He has thrown 25 consecutive scoreless innings... Tortugas starters allowed just 3 runs in 17 innings, posting a 1.59 ERA with a 0-1 record... The Tortugas lost 1-0 in a 9-inning game for the first time since 4/21/16 in Clearwater... Ibandel Isabel finished with 2 of the 4 Tortuga hits. He now has 16 multi-hit games.
