Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Jose Pujols powered his fifth double in three days as Clearwater shut out Tampa in the series finale, 2-0 on Friday night at Spectrum Field.
Ramon Rosso (3-1) faced the minimum through four innings, before walking Steven Sensley in the top of the fifth. Rosso earned the win for the Threshers, spinning six scoreless innings of two-hit ball, permitting one walk while striking out seven in the start.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first five innings, until Raul Rivas dribbled a swinging bunt to the right side of the infield to lead off the bottom of the sixth.
Tampa starting pitcher Rony Garcia (0-2) scooped up the ball, looking to throw over to first, but no one was covering, allowing Rivas to reach on the infield single. Two strikeouts followed, but with J.P. Crawford bating, Rivas stole second, and Crawford walked to put two men on for Pujols with two outs.
Pujols hit a ground ball double that hugged the right field line and brought the runners home to give the Threshers (23-15) (55-51) the 2-0 lead.
The Tarpons (20-19) (55-54) threatened in the eighth inning. Steven Sensley hit a fly ball that sunk into shallow center for a single against reliever Jakob Hernandez, putting the leadoff man on for Tampa. Sensley made a late move on a ball in the dirt, but was thrown out at second by Henri Lartigue to erase the baserunner.
Angel Aguilar then struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch. Kellin Deglan's sacrifice bunt moved Aguilar to second, and stole third to put a man in scoring position with two outs for the Tarpons.
Back-to-back walks filled the bases with the tying run standing at second base. Addison Russ came on to pitch, inheriting the bases-loaded jam, and fielded the final out himself on a tapper to the third base side of the infield to strand the baserunners, and hold the Tarpons off the board.
Hernandez tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, and Russ went on to toss a perfect ninth and earn his seventh save.
The Threshers are on the road for a three-game set in Bradenton at LECOM Park starting on Friday. Adonis Medina (9-3) is slotted to start for Clearwater against Dario Agrazal (0-0) with the first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. Kirsten Karbach will be on the call with the pregame show starting at 6:15 p.m.
