Birmingham Barons News Release

KODAK, TN - Birmingham Barons outfielder Courtney Hawkins clobbered his second home run of the season and Peter Tago posted his third win of the season as Birmingham captured a 3-2 thriller over Tennessee.

Hawkins, the White Sox no. 9 prospect, crushed the first pitch of the ninth inning to pull the Barons out in front 2-1 before Marcus Lemon scored Joey DeMichele for the eventual game-winning run.

DeMichele also added a significant bit of defense in the decision, with the Gold Glove winner tagging out Jacob Hannemann before firing to first base for a bases-loaded double play in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Despite allowing a run, Tago forced Smokies batter Jeimer Candelario to pop out just three pitches later to secure the 3-2 victory.

Barons' starter Carson Fulmer tossed five scoreless innings, fanning two Smokies hitters and walking five batters. He allowed just three hits and placed 54 strikes among 95 total pitches.

Brian Clark threw 2.2 innings in relief, allowing Tennessee's first run of the game but surrendering just two hits while striking out three.

Nicky Delmonico plated Jake Peter on a hard-hit fielder's choice to put the Barons up 1-0 in the sixth inning. Peter beat the throw home to come out on the winning end of a play at the plate, minutes after dodging a tag while stealing second base.

LHP David Holmberg eyes a return to the win column after his last start at Regions Field was cut short due to rain. The southpaw allowed three runs on just four hits in six innings pitched April 15th against the Smokies.
