MOBILE, AL - The Southern League announced today that Mobile BayBears right-hand pitcher Edgar Garcia and infielder Kevin Medrano and have been named the League's Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week of May 9 through 15. The BayBears sweep of the weekly awards are the first Southern League honors for any Mobile player this season.
On Friday night, Garcia made his second start of the season and threw only the second nine-inning, complete game shutout in the Southern League in 2016. The Dominican Republic native become the first BayBears pitcher to throw a nine-inning, complete game shutout since RHP Mike Bolsinger did it on May 31, 2013. Garcia guided the BayBears to a 7-0 victory over the Mississippi Braves in Pearl, MS. The righty allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out seven M-Braves in the win. His 0.67 WHIP was shared for the lowest in the league last week.
Meanwhile, Medrano tortured Southern League pitchers over an eight day span last week, hitting .556 with five runs, 15 hits, 21 total bases, two doubles, two triples, five RBI and a stolen base. The infielder's .600 on-base percentage was best in the league, while a .778 slugging percentage and 1.378 OPS were both among top five numbers in league play. The Lee's Summit, Missouri native raised his batting average 105 points to past a .391 clip on the season. In 17 games with Mobile last year, Medrano batted .296 (21-for-71). On the back end of Sunday's doubleheader against Jackson, Medrano went 3-for-3 with two runs, a triple, three RBI and a walk as the BayBears cruised past the Generals 9-0.
The BayBears and Generals continue their series on Monday with first pitch set to begin at 6:35 p.m. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m.
