Paez's Single Completes Wild Win for Rumble Ponies over Thunder

BINGHAMTON, NY - In a game that totaled just four hits through the first five innings and finished with 23 combined hits, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (33-25) had the last laugh with a 7-6 walk-off win over the Thunder (34-25) on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium.

With the loss and a loss by Hartford to Akron, the Thunder remain 0.5 games back of first place in the Eastern Division with six games remaining on the first half schedule.

A pitchers duel between Deivi Garcia and David Peterson developed through the first five innings as each starter limited their opponent to three baserunners or less. The Thunder broke through first when Chris Gittens slammed an opposite field two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning. Gittens' 11th homer of the season leads the team and ties him for fifth-most in the Eastern League.

Binghamton accumulated four straight baserunners with two outs in the sixth inning, leading to two runs to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. Adonis Rosa entered in relief of Garcia and surrendered a go-ahead two-run single to Quinn Brodey to take a 4-2 lead.

Garcia ended up taking a no-decision despite generally throwing well on Tuesday night. The 20-year-old right-hander allowed four runs on five hits and four walks and struck out six. He threw a season-high 103 pitches.

Trailing 4-2, the Thunder immediately re-took the lead in the top of the seventh. Matt Lipka drove in Kyle Holder with a solid single and later in the frame Mandy Alvarez plated Lipka and Kellin Deglan with a base hit to right-center.

The 5-4 lead for the Thunder lasted into the bottom of the eighth when Binghamton managed to re-take the lead against Rosa. With the bases loaded and two out, Jason Krizan singled in a pair with a hot shot grounder off the glove of Hoy Jun Park to take a 6-5 advantage.

The Thunder had one more push for offense in the top of the ninth against Rumble Ponies closer Blake Taylor. With one out, Lipka was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second to get himself into scoring position. Mandy Alvarez then came through with a base hit that landed just inches inside the right field line for the game-tying single. The Thunder stranded the bases loaded in the ninth inning as Matt Blackham struck out Zack Zehner to end the inning.

Binghamton completed the wild win with their ninth inning rally. After Daniel Alvarez retired the first man he faced in the inning, David Thompson reached on an infield single and the next two batters worked a walk to load the bases. Mike Paez then lined a 1-1 offering into left field to send Binghamton into a celebration on the field.

Mandy Alvarez led the 11-hit attack with the two clutch hits in the late innings and three runs batted in. Deglan and Holder also added two-hit days at the plate.

RHP Albert Abreu (2-5, 4.07) will start for the Thunder, RHP Mickey Jannis (2-0, 2.17) will go for Binghamton.
