San Rafael Pacifics News Release
MAUI - San Rafael Pacifics starter Brian Gump struck out eight, allowed just five hits and a run, in a complete-game seven-inning win, as San Rafael took the opener of a doubleheader with the Maui Na Koa Ikaika 5-1 on Saturday at Iron Maehara Stadium.
Catcher Jon Hurst was 1 for 2 with a double and three RBIs, and Maikel Jova tallied another hit, going 1 for 3 with a double and a run.
Gump, in his first professional season since moving from the outfield to the mound, improved to 5-2, and lowered his ERA to 2.47 - fourth best in the North American League.
San Rafael (29-19) beat Eri Yoshida for the second time in three starts, as the knuckleballer lasted 3 1/3 innings for Maui (25-23).
In the nightcap, San Rafael couldn't hold a one-run lead in the sixth, as Maui rallied for three in the bottom half of the inning, and hung on to win the seven-inning contest.
Hurst (2 for 3), Henry Calderon (2-3) and Zack Pace (1 for 2, walk) carried the offense for the Pacifics. Tyler Graham (2-2) took the loss, allowing two earned runs in 1/3 of and inning.
Mike Koons (2-3) got the win for Maui, despite recording just one out, and Victor Ferrante earned his sixth save of the season.
Jova (0 for 4) failed to record a hit for the Pacifics in Game No. 2, but extended his consecutive-games streak of reaching base safely to 47. Jova, leading the NAL with a .361 average, also scored a run for San Rafael, who went just 5-7 on its final road trip of the season.
San Rafael is off Sunday, and travels home to face the Sonoma County Grapes on Monday at 7:15 p.m. at Albert Park for Pacifics Back to School Night. The first 500 kids in attendance will receive a Pacifics back to school kit, courtesy of Office Depot.
