Fort Worth Cats News Release

Fort Worth left fielder Chad Gabriel was the hero in Sunday night's 5-4 win over the RoadRunners when he threw out Edinburg catcher Osiel Flores on a bang-bang play to finish the game. Gabriel contributed on the offensive side with two base hits and a run scored.

First baseman Jose Ruiz also paid a large contribution to the final score, tying the ball game at 4-4 with a two-run homerun in the sixth inning. The blast was Ruiz's fifth of the year.

Fort Worth also saw another good pitching performance from starter Steve Barnes (5-4) who settled into the game after giving up four runs in the first that would not have happened if it were not for a throwing error by shortstop Shelby Ford. In the second-sixth innings, Barnes allowed no runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

The fans at LaGrave Field also saw a new face on the mound in the seventh inning when recently added relief pitcher and former Baltimore Oriole Rick Bauer made a one-inning relief appearance for Barnes. Bauer struck out a batter and allowed no hits.

Closer Jeff Jamnik came in for the ninth and remains perfect with 17 saves in as many opportunities. Jamnik struck out two RoadRunners.

Barnes' Edinburg counterpart, Ryan Smith (3-4) had a similar line to Barnes allowing five runs on seven hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

Shorstop Felix Molina dropped a two-run bomb to right-center to start off the scoring for the RoadRunners in the first inning. Two batters later, catcher Osiel Flores cleared the bases with a triple to give Edinburg a 4-0 lead.

With the win, the Cats picked up a game on the first-place RoadRunners. Fort Worth improves their record to 38-31 and Edinburg's record falls to 41-27. The Cats and RoadRunners will face off again for the second game of a four game set Monday night at 7:05 p.m. at LaGrave. Tickets can be purchased online at FWCats.com or by phone at (817) 332-CATS.
