Early Scoring Not Enough against Cats

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners allowed a four-run lead to slip away as they were defeated 5-4 by the Fort Worth Cats Sunday night at LaGrave Field.

The Roadrunners (41-28) got the scoring started in the top of the first. With runners on the corners, a double-steal allowed Derek Perren to score from third. One out later, Felix Molina hit a two-run homerun off of Cats starter Steve Barnes (5-4). After Luis Sumoza walked, Vincent Blue followed with an RBI triple that made it 4-0 Edinburg.

C.J. Beatty got the Cats (38-31) on the board in the bottom of the third with a two-run double that cut the Roadrunners lead in half 4-2.

Fort Worth took the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Jose Ruiz hit a two-run homerun off of Edinburg starter Ryan Smith. Later in the inning, a fielding error allowed Chuck Caufield to reach and then he came in to score on an RBI single by Chad Gabriel that gave the Cats the 5-4 edge.

Edinburg could not get any runs against the Cats' bullpen as Rick Bauer, T.J. Bozeman, and Jeff Jamnik combined for three scoreless innings in relief. Jamnik pitched a scoreless ninth for his 17th save giving the Cats the 5-4 victory.

Smith (3-4) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, in six innings pitched with six strikeouts.

The Roadrunners and Cats will continue their four-game series Monday night at LaGrave Field. Aaron Tullo (3-2) is expected to face Blake Parry with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
