NORMAL, IL-The Traverse City Beach Bums saw center fielder Zack Pace and starting pitcher Bryan Banes put together a pair of incredible performances as they beat the Normal Cornbelters in front of 2,144 fans at The Corn Crib by a score of 9-0.
Pace began the ballgame by launching his first home run of the season in the opening inning. The home run was his first since August of 2010 and gave Traverse City a 1-0 lead. Pace went on to reach base all six times he came to the plate after reaching on three more singles and drawing a pair of walks in the contest.
As for Banes, he was exceptional as well, retiring the first 13 batters he faced in the contest. It wasn't until a two-out single in the fifth inning from Normal right fielder Asif Shah that the Cornbelters had a baserunner. Banes ended up pitching eight scoreless innings just five days after pitching his first professional complete game. In the contest, Banes tied a career high by striking out seven batters in the ballgame.
Pace wasn't the only Beach Bum with an impressive offensive performance. All-Star left fielder J.T. Hall went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs batted in and three stolen bases in the game as well. Shortstop Jose Vargas went 2-for-4 with an RBI, making him the second Beach Bum to hit the 50-RBI mark in 2011. Designated hitter Greg Burns had two hits and launched a solo home run in the ninth inning, his third with Traverse City this season.
With the win, the Beach Bums record improves to 40-35, while Normal falls to 35-40 on the season. The top of the Traverse City lineup led the offensive charge with 10 base hits from the first four hitters in the Beach Bums lineup.
The Beach Bums head to Marion, Illinois for a three-game series beginning Friday night at 8:05 p.m. Traverse City all-time wins leader David Nathanson starts for the Beach Bums against Southern Illinois righty Ryan Zink.
