NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters (35-40), presented by the Illinois Corn Farmers, were defeated by the Traverse City Beach Bums (40-35) 8-0 Thursday night at the Corn Crib. Traverse City starter Bryan Banes (W, 9-1) shut down the CornBelters, taking a perfect game into the 5th inning.
The Beach Bum southpaw worked eight innings of shutout baseball, allowing three base runners on the evening, two of them being singles by Asif Shah. It was not until the 8th inning when the CornBelters had a runner in scoring position as a walk to Mike Mobbs moved Shah to second base.
CornBelter starter Matt Mossey (L, 1-1) worked 5.2 innings of baseball giving up six earned runs on nine hits and striking out three.
Traverse City wasted no time in scoring as Zack Pace hit a lead-off homerun on the fifth pitch of the game. Pace's first long ball of the year put the Beach Bums up 1-0 in the first.
Pace reached on another lead-off hit in the third and moved to second on Matt Brown's ground out. The Beach Bum center fielder then stole third base and came around to score on Andrew Barbaro's throwing error, giving Traverse City a 2-0 lead. The Beach Bums were successful in odd-numbered innings as they extended their lead in the 5th. With two on and one out, Jose Vargas singled home Pace to tack on another run for a 3-0 Traverse City lead. J.T. Hall followed with a double to plate Matt Brown and Vargas. Hall then stole third base and scored on an RBI groundout from Jeff Flagg increasing the Beach Bums lead 6-0.
Traverse City's seventh unanswered run was scored in the 6th. Greg Burns led off with a single and a walk to Pace forced Mossey out of the game. With Michael Click at the mound, Brown singled up the middle to plate Burns and awarded the Beach Bums a 7-0 lead. Gary Parinar came on to start the 8th for the CornBelters. Parinar walked two and hit a batter before giving up a sacrifice fly to Hall, scoring Pace for his fourth run of the night and giving Traverse City an 8-0 lead.
Greg Burns continued the offense, leading off the ninth with a solo blast. Burns' fifth homerun of the year put the Beach Bums up 9-0 in the ninth.
The CornBelters continue their home stand and begin a three-game series against the Rockford RiverHawks at 7 p.m. Friday at the Corn Crib. Tyler Lavigne (4-7, 3.54) will take the mound for Normal as Joe Scumaci (4-2, 3.83) will throw for Rockford.
