JOLIET SLAMMERS (43-30) vs. GATEWAY GRIZZLIES (30-43)
Thursday, August 11 - 7:05 p.m. CT
Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL
Game #74 - Home Game #35 (43-30, 21-13)
LHP #31 KEVIN CRIMMEL (4-3, 4.80 ERA) vs. LHP #37 ANDRES CACERES JR. (2-1, 3.60 ERA)
Last Time Out.
The Slammers (43-30) knocked off the Gateway Grizzlies (30-43) Wednesday night by a final score of 7-5 as the bullpen once again held on to the lead down the stretch. A Charlie Lisk two run home run gave Gateway a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. But the Slammers responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame, highlighted by a Sean Estand bases clearing double to drive in three runs. After four innings though the game was tied at four as Gateway tallied one in the second and one in the fourth, both runs coming with two outs. Joliet took the lead for good in the fifth. A Hector Pellot sacrifice fly and a Reid Chenworth bases loaded walk gave the Slammers a 6-4 edge. Gateway got a run in the sixth to cut the lead to one but a Ben Hewett RBI single in the eighth put the Slammers back up by two. Brian Smith and Ryan Quigley both survived some serious jams to lock up the win for the Slammers.
For Starters.
Today is rookie Kevin Crimmel's 17th appearance and 8th start of the year. Crimmel is making only his second start since June 22. His record as a starter this season is 4-1. He beat the Traverse City Beach Bums on August 1 as Crimmel went seven innings, scattering five hits and giving up four runs, three earned. Crimmel's last pitching appearance came out of the bullpen on August 6 as he threw an inning of shutout ball against River City. The Slammers acquired Crimmel from the California League's Palm Desert Coyotes. Crimmel graduated from Villanova in 2010, tying the school's all-time appearances record with 71 games pitched.
Going for the sweep.
Joliet is going for their 6th sweep of the season and 3rd at home. A win today would also mark a season sweep of Gateway. The Slammers have not gone undefeated against any other team this season.
We're going streaking!
Brad Netzel is currently working on a 12 game hitting streak, the longest hitting streak any Slammers player has recorded this season.
Comeback kids.
Last night was the Slammers' 23rd come-from-behind victory out of 43 total wins on the year.
#Winning.
Joliet has set a new season high of 13 games over .500.
Taking charge.
The Slammers have matched their season best lead of 4.5 games in the East Division. It's been more than a month (the end of play on July 8) since the Slammers took over first place by themselves in the East. They have not surrendered it since taking over. Joliet did not have a lead by themselves at all before July 8.
Flores on fire.
Josh Flores is hitting .366 with four home runs over the Slammers' last ten games. He had four homers total on the year before the recent hot streak.
Powerful duo.
Erik Lis and Kyle Maunus have combined for 29 home runs this year. That's more than the rest of the active Slammers combined (28).
Pitching is the key.
The Slammers are tied for the third best ERA in the Frontier League at 3.83. In addition, they've held opponents to a league low .244 batting average. The bullpen has been especially strong, compiling an ERA of 3.02.
