P-Bruins Fall to Pirates 7-2

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Portland Pirates 7-2 at the Cumberland County Civic Center Saturday night in their season opener. Providence got goals from Petr Kalus and Pascal Pelletier.

The Pirates opened the scoring only 23 seconds into the first period when Zenon Konopka banked the puck off of and past P-Bruins netminder Brian Finley. The puck trickled across the goal line to give Portland the 1-0 lead. Colby Genoway had the lone assist. Portland went up 2-0 while on their first power play of the game. Drew Miller took a shot which Finley initially stopped. With the puck sitting in the crease Tim Brent poked it into the net. Pierre Parenteau had the second assist. Portland took a 3-0 lead when Brian Salcido blasted the puck past Finley from right inside the blue line. Genoway and Kent Huskins had the assists. The P-Bruins headed into the first intermission down two goals as Kalus scored his first professional goal and first P-Bruins goal of the season. Kris Versteeg held the puck in the corner and fed it halfway up the boards to David Krejci, who sent a centering pass to a wide open Kalus. Portland led Providence 3-1 after a period of play.

In the second period it took until the 12:25 mark for either team to score. Brent tallied his second goal of the evening for the Pirates with Miller and Parenteau picking up the assists. Providence answered back with their second power play goal of the game. While on a 5-on-3 man advantage, Matt Lashoff passed the puck from the blue line to Versteeg who was in the left face off circle. Versteeg made a cross ice pass to Pelletier who was wide open on the backside of the play. With Pirates goaltender Mike Wall on the wrong side of the crease Pelletier shot the puck into an empty net. The Pirates went into the second intermission with a 4-2 lead.

In the third period, the Pirates tallied three more times. The first goal of the period came at the 6:17 mark on the power play from Shawn Thornton with Clay Wilson and Brett Skinner grabbing the assists. Portland scored again on the power play at the 14:30 mark, this time from Ryan Carter with Miller and Bruno St. Jacques picking up the assists. The Pirates rounded out the scoring with an unassisted shorthanded goal from Miller at the 18:53 mark.

In net for the P-Bruins Finley stopped 38 of 45 shots, while Wall made 22 saves for the Pirates. Providence went 2 for 7 on the power play, while Portland was 3 for 6 on the man advantage.
