Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Peoria Rivermen got a powerplay goal in overtime from Jon DiSalvatore to beat the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights 4-3 on Friday night at Carver Arena. The loss spoiled the Knights' 2006-07 season opener.
The Knights scored the first goal of the game nearly halfway through the first period. Dustin Boyd slipped the puck out of the right wing corner and found Dave Moss. He swatted in his own rebound to make it 1-0. Carsen Germyn picked up the other assist.
The Rivermen came right back just 1:07 later when DiSalvatore settled a bouncing puck and rifled a shot past Knights' goalie Brent Krahn.
The Knights retook the lead on a powerplay later in the period. With Boyd once again working below the goal line, he skated behind the net before feeding Moss with a pass in the slot. He one-timed the puck past goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu to make it 2-1 after one.
After a scoreless second period, the action picked up in the third. First, Ryan Ramsay scored off a scramble in front to tie the game at two just 3:17 into the period. David Backes followed that goal just 1:02 later to give the Rivermen the 3-2 lead.
The Knights weren't done. Defenseman Brad Ference kept the puck alive at the right point, walked down the wall and snapped a wrist shot past Beckford-Tseu to send the game to overtime tied at three.
The Knights ended the third period and began the overtime with a powerplay but couldn't convert. The Rivermen then would get a powerplay in the last minute of the overtime, and they wouldn't miss. DiSalvatore skated across the goal line and lifted a shot over a kneeling Krahn for his second of the night.
The 4-3 overtime win was the eighth straight for the Rivermen over the Knights dating back to last season.
Three Stars: 1. Jon DiSalvatore (PEO)-2 goals, GWG; 2. Dave Moss (OMA)-2 goals; 3. Jeff Woywitka (PEO)
