Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell for the first time in their last three games, 2-1 to the top-ranked Manchester Monarchs Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 8,741 fans. The P-Bruins now sit five points behind the Monarchs for first place in the Atlantic Division but remain second in the division, one point ahead of the Hartford Wolf Pack. Providence got its lone goal from defenseman Dwayne Zinger.

Manchester opened the scoring late in the first period while on the man-advantage. At 17:55 of the first, with Providence rookie Ross Carlson in the penalty box, the Monarchs forced a pile of players in front of Hannu Toivonen's net, eventually beating the netminder with Marty Murray's 10th goal of the season. The power play goal was assisted on by Matt Moulson and Gabe Gauthier.

The Monarchs doubled their lead nearly nine minutes into the second period as Brendan Buckley fired a missile from the low wing that Toivonen did not appear to see clearly, resulting in his second goal of the season. The goal came only one second after a second Manchester power play expired. Doug Nolan and goalie Jason LaBarbera recorded the helpers.

Providence got its only goal on a rocket from Zinger, his third goal of the year, 2:09 into the final period. Zinger was set up by Matt Lashoff and Ben Walter, playing in his first game back from a four-game call-up to the Boston Bruins.

Toivonen took the loss, stopping 24 shots, while LaBarbara earned his 34th win with 31 saves. The P-Bruins out-shot the Monarchs 32-26, including 17-11 in the second period.

The teams combined for 62 penalty minutes, 21 for Providence, as the P-Bruins were scoreless in six power play opportunities. The Monarchs scored once in two chances.
