Providence Bruins News Release
Utica, NY - The Providence Bruins defeated the Utica Comets tonight 4-2 to pick up their first road win of the season. Forward Jake DeBrusk and defenseman Matt Grzelcyk each scored their first professional goals for the P-Bruins, while goaltender Dan Vladar recorded 30 saves in the win.
Utica opened the scoring just 6:30 into the first period when forward Derek Hulak slipped the puck behind P-Bruins goaltender Dan Vladar. It was Hulak's second of the season, unassisted, to give the Comets the early lead. Utica continued to provide pressure throughout the first, recording 14 shots to the P-Bruins 6. Providence's Colton Hargrove and Utica's Alexandre Grenier dropped the gloves at 15:11 in the period, with Grenier receiving an additional 2:00 for Instigating to give the P-Bruins a power play. The power play opportunity proved unsuccessful as the Bruins failed to score on the man-advantage. Providence had another chance to tie things up late in the period when Comets defenseman Andrey Pedan was called for Hooking at 17:08, but was unable to convert on the power play and the period ended 1-0 Utica.
Providence began the second period with a much stronger pace as the two teams traded shots in the first half of the period. The P-Bruins finally broke through 11:29 into the period when Jake DeBrusk scored his first of the season off an assist by Peter Cehlarik. It was DeBrusk's first as a P-Bruins and first professional goal, evening the score at 1-1. The game remained tied until late in the period when Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk put a shot past Utica goaltender Thatcher Demko to give Providence the lead 2-1. The goal, assisted by Wayne Simpson and Sean Kuraly at 15:39, was also Grzelcyk's first professional goal. Despite some back and forth play for the remainder of the period, the score remained tied heading into intermission.
The P-Bruins didn't wait long to increase the lead, scoring just 5:48 into the third period when Peter Cehlarik tallied his second of the season on an assist by Tyler Randell. The score remained 3-1 in favor of Providence until 10:16 in the period when Jordan Subban, brother of Bruins goaltender Malcolm Subban, scored his third of the season. The goal, assisted by Michael Chaput and Ashton Sautner, cut the lead to 3-2. The Comets would get no closer behind some quality defensive play by the Bruins, and a late high-sticking penalty by forward Derek Hulak. Providence forward Anton Blidh registered his first of the season with an empty net power play goal to increase the lead to 4-2, assisted by defenseman Matt Bartkowski. The goal capped the scoring and sealed the win for the P-Bruins, good for their first on the road this season. Providence finished out their road trip tomorrow night in Syracuse in a matchup with the Crunch.
