St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL -The IceCaps were persistent in their battles from behind on Friday night as they topped the Rochester Americans 5-3 during opening night at Mile One Centre.
Opening weekend at Mile One kicked off with a puck drop from special guest, and legendary Montreal Canadien Guy Lafleur.
The Amerks kicked off the scoring with less than five minutes into the first with a tally from Evan Rodrigues, and then again with a goal from Justin Bailey just three minutes later. The IceCaps rallied from behind with tallies from Nikita Scherbak (from Stefan Matteau and Mark Barberio), and Jeremy Gregoire (from Mark MacMillan and Brett Lernout) to tie it up.
Rochester's Rodrigues picked up his second goal of the game early in the second and held the 3-2 lead for the rest of the second frame. The IceCaps came out hard in the third, firing 20 shots in 20 minutes. Philip Samuelsson picked up his first goal of the season with MacMillan logging his second assist of the game.
Sven Andrighetto (last week's CCM/AHL Player of the Week) potted his fourth goal in four games - and the game winning tally. Daniel Audette picked up his first pro point with an assist on Andrighetto's marker, and Chris Terry recorded the other helper.
The Amerks pulled netminder Jeff Kasdorf with just under a minute left, and Matteau capitalized on the empty-net to stretch the lead to 5-3.
The IceCaps rematch the Rochester Americans again tomorrow night at Mile One Centre.
