Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, member of the American Hockey League, defeated the Portland Pirates for the second straight day, 3-2 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday afternoon, extending their points-streak to a season-high eight games, going 7-0-1 in that span. The P-Bruins got goals from forwards Kris Versteeg, Nate DiCasmirro and David Krejci.
Providence got on the scoreboard twice during a penalty-minute filled first period of play. The team's goal-leader Versteeg started the scoring just 2:33 into the action with his 21st goal of the season, a power-play goal that took only 46 seconds of the man-advantage to put the puck home for a 1-0 P-Bruins lead. With the goal, the rookie forward extended his points-streak to four games, during which time he has amassed three goals and four assists. Receiving assists on the play were Krejci, now riding an eight-game points-streak with six goals and eight helpers in the stretch, and defenseman Nathan Dempsey, playing in his 800th professional contest. Providence increased its lead to two less than four minutes later when rookie T.J. Trevelyan set up linemate DiCasmirro in front of Portland goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris. The goal was the second of the day for the P-Bruins on the power-play. For DiCasmirro, the score was his fifth of the year and the helpers went to Trevelyan and blueliner Sean Curry. Ultimately, after a skirmish around center-ice between both sides 4:10 into the frame, the two teams totaled 95 penalty minutes in the first 20 minutes with only the Pirates' Aaron Rome getting ejected from the game.
Portland cut the deficit in half late in the middle period as Matt Keith and Tim Brent helped to find Drew Miller cutting backdoor on Providence netminder Philippe Sauve for his sixth goal of the season at the 14:39 mark, and also the third power-play goal of the game between the two sides. The score held at a 2-1 P-Bruins lead after 40 minutes.
Providence and Portland exchanged goals in the final period with both coming at even-strength. First, it was the P-Bruins Krejci lighting the lamp on Grumet-Morris for his 14th goal of the season at the 11:20 marker, his fourth consecutive multiple-point game, and the assists went to Petr Kalus, extending his points-streak to four games, and defenseman Mark Stuart. Just over one minute later, the Pirates climbed back within a goal on Curtis Glencross's sixth of the season, helped by Petteri Wirtanen and Ryan Shannon.
Ultimately, though, the scoring ended there and Providence skated on to a 3-2 victory. Sauve earned his second straight win, stopping 21 shots, while Grumet-Morris took the loss despite 26 saves. Penalty minutes finished at a 56-55 P-Bruins edge as both teams converted on the power play, Providence at 2-for-8 and Portland with one goal in five chances.
Providence gets back into action with a pair of road games next weekend, returning to the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland to take on the Pirates Friday, January 26 at 7:05 p.m. before traveling a few hours south to Massachusetts to battle the Worcester Sharks Saturday at 7 p.m. The P-Bruins make their way back to The Dunk for Hat Night Friday, February 2 to match-up with the Pirates yet again for the fourth time in five games. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. Information on tickets and Providence Bruins season ticket packages for the 2006-07 regular season can be obtained by calling the team ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or by logging onto www.providencebruins.com.
