SAN ANTONIO - Don MacLean's hat trick sent the Rampage to two extra sessions and earned a point in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Manchester Monarchs Sunday evening at the AT&T Center.
The six-round shootout began when Manchester's Marty Murray when top-shelf on David LeNeveu followed by Yanick Lehoux's upper-net goal. Each team took turns for four more rounds coming up empty until Murray snuck one under LeNeveu for the win.
The Monarch's were first to score just under nine minutes after the first face-off with an unassisted goal past a sliding LeNeveu from Lauri Tukonen.
Noah Clarke added to the Monarch's lead with the first of two short-handed goals just over three minutes into the second stanza. MacLean responded two minutes later with a shot from the slot through three Monarch defenders into the net to cut the deficit in half. Four minutes later and on the power-play, MacLean set a new season-high for fastest goals scored by one player to bump the score an even 2-2.
The third period was more like a tennis match with San Antonio matching each Manchester goal. Murray was first up for the Monarchs and had help from former Rampage forward Tim Jackman only 1:25 into the final frame. Joel Perrault answered with a backdoor goal two minutes later as former Monarch enforcer Ryan Flinn and Randall Gelech were credited with the assists.
After four minutes had elapsed, Matt Ryan caught a break for a one-on-one advantage against LeNeveu and came up with the 4-3 lead. MacLean rounded out his three-goal game when he punched in the game-tying goal with just over seven minutes left in regulation and became only the fifth player in Rampage history to record a hat trick
The Rampage (17-24-1-2) begin their 16-game rodeo road trip on Thursday with three games in three nights hitting Toronto, Hamilton and Syracuse.
