P-Bruins Defeat Monarchs 3-2

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Manchester Monarchs 3-2 in a shootout Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins got their goals in regulation from Jordan Knackstedt, and Pascal Pelletier and in the shootout from Knackstedt and Nate Thompson. The 53-16-3-4 Regular Season Eastern Conference Champion P-Bruins are back in action Wednesday against the Worcester Sharks at the DCU Center at 7:05 p.m. Following all of today's American Hockey League action, the P-Bruins now know they will face the Monarchs in the Atlantic Division Semifinals of the 2008 Calder Cup Playoffs.

After a scoreless opening period, the P-Bruins took a 1-0 advantage at the 3:46 mark of the second period, while on the power play. Brett Skinner held the puck in the corner and tossed it in front of the goal for T.J. Trevelyan. He tipped the puck to Knackstedt, who scored his first professional goal in his first professional game. Manchester tied the game at one at the 14:01 mark. John Zeiler tallied his fifth goal of the season, with Joe Piskula grabbing the lone assist. The game went into the second intermission tied at one.

Manchester took its first lead of the game at the 7:29 mark of the third period. Matt Moulson netted his 28th goal of the season, with Troy Milam and Teddy Purcell recording the assists. Moments later at the 8:19 mark the P-Bruins tied the game at two. Matt Hunwick held the puck in front of the P-Bruins bench and made a pass up the middle to Pelletier. He sent the puck over the shoulder of Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier and into the net for his 36th goal of the season. The game went into overtime tied at two.

After a scoreless overtime, the P-Bruins Knackstedt and Thompson scored the only two goals of the shootout, while P-Bruins net minder Adam Courchaine stopped all four shots he faced. Providence went on to the 3-2 victory.

Courchaine stopped 21 of 23 shots for the P-Bruins in his professional debut, while Bernier made 34 saves for the Monarchs. The P-Bruins went 1-for-6 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.

The Regular Season Eastern Conference Champion P-Bruins return to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday for Team Poster Night against the Manchester Monarchs at 7:05 p.m. The P-Bruins are also home for a Family Game Sunday versus the Lowell Devils at 4:05 p.m. Receive one ticket, hot dog and soda starting as low as $16.
