Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Falcons 5-4 Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins got their goals from Wacey Rabbit, Ned Lukacevic, Kirk MacDonald, Jeff Penner and Johnny Boychuk. The first place P-Bruins begin an eight game road trip beginning Tuesday against the Manchester Monarchs.
The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead at the 32 second mark of the opening period. Jordan Knackstedt sent the puck to Matt Marquardt, who found Rabbit in the slot. He netted his 11th goal of the season. Springfield tied the game at one at the 18:03 mark. Tim Sestito tallied his fourth goal of the season, while Colin McDonald recorded the lone assist. The game went into the first intermission tied at one.
Providence retook the lead at the 22 second mark of the second period. Kevin Schaeffer carried the puck into the zone and sent it behind the net for Brad Marchand. He found Lukacevic along the right boards, who put a shot towards the goal. The puck bounced off a Falcons' defensemen and into the net for his third goal of the season. The Falcons once again battled back to tie the game. At the 9:46 mark, Rob Bina netted his first goal of the season, while Ryan O'Marra and Stephane Goulet grabbed the assists. The P-Bruins went back ahead at the 10:19 mark. Penner had the puck in his own zone and sent it up the left boards for Levi Nelson, who chipped the puck ahead to MacDonald. He poked it past Falcons goaltender Devan Dubnyk and into the net for his second goal of the season. Providence scored again at the 11:43 mark, while on the power play. Kevin Regan started the play by settling the puck down behind his net and working it off for Mikko Lehtonen. He dropped it back to the left point for Penner, who slapped it into the net for his seventh goal of the season. The P-Bruins went into the second intermission with the 4-2 lead.
In the third period, the Falcons continued to battle back. They pulled within a goal at the 5:52 mark. Ryan Potulny tallied his 23rd goal of the season, with Taylor Chorney and Shane Willis picking up the assists. The Falcons tied the game at four at the 16:03 mark, while on the power play. Willis scored his first goal of the season with Rob Schremp and Potulny getting the assists. The P-Bruins took the lead for good at the 16:44 mark. Marquardt held the puck in the corner and worked it up the right boards for Rabbit. He sent it to the point for Boychuk, who blasted it into the net for his 14th goal of the season. Providence went on to the 5-4 victory.
Regan stopped 22 of 26 shots for the P-Bruins, while Dubnyk made 31 saves for the Falcons. The P-Bruins were 1-for-6 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
