Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 7,067 fans. The P-Bruins received two goals from Trent Whitfield and additional strikes from Zach Hamill, Max Sauvé, David Laliberte and Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman.
Providence scored early and often in the first period, lighting the lamp twice on their first five shots of the frame. Hamill tallied his sixth goal of the season just two minutes in when he collected a Joel Martin rebound off a shot from Alain Goulet. After increasingly more physical play from both teams, Jeremy Reich and Chris Frank dropped the mitts in a heated exchange behind Anton Khudobin's net. The P-Bruins were undeterred, however, as Whitfield beat Martin top-corner glove-side to give Providence a 2-0 advantage at 8:21 of the period. Kirk MacDonald and LaVallee-Smotherman assisted on the play. Bridgeport's frustrations continued to rise and Providence was able to capitalize on the man-advantage. Sauve beat Martin top shelf with a beautiful snap shot from the high slot. Whitfield and Goulet assisted on the goal to send the P-Bruins into the first intermission leading 3-0.
In a very physical second frame, both Providence and Bridgeport were held scoreless. In the twenty minutes, there were 32 total penalty minutes served between the P-Bruins and Sound Tigers and two game misconducts, both against Providence as MacDonald and Andrew Bodnarchuk were sent to the locker room early.
Whitfield continued his scoring barrage when he scored a short-handed goal at the 2:35 mark as he collected a pass from Colby Cohen and stuffed it past Martin for his second goal of the game. The remainder of the period was penalty filled and featured more misconducts late to both Hamill and Whitfield. Providence capitalized and then some on a 5-on-3 power play late in the frame, scoring twice. Laliberte registered his first goal as a P-Bruin at the 17:34 mark. Whitfield picked up his second assist on the goal and Goulet notched his third of the game. Just 22 seconds later, LaVallee-Smotherman made it 6-0 with his 10th goal of the year off an assist from Valabik.
Khudobin earned the win, his third in a row, stopping 20 attempts. Martin suffered the loss, blocking 29 of 35 shots. Providence scored three power play goals on nine tries and went a perfect 8-for-8 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins travel to Manchester on Wednesday night to face the Monarchs in a 7 p.m. tilt. The team returns to The Dunk on Friday to face the Sound Tigers again at 7:05 p.m. for St. Patty's Hat Night. The club heads north to Portland on Saturday before finishing the weekend at The Dunk against the Sound Tigers for Plush Snoopy Night on Sunday at 4:05 p.m..
