Devils Split Weekend Series with Phantoms

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The Albany Devils carried a lead into the third period, but couldn't hold on as the Adirondack Phantoms earned a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The two teams split a weekend series and the Time Warner Cable Cup is now tied, 4-4. Albany goes to 24-34-1-3 on the season, while Adirondack improves to 21-32-3-6.
Stephen Gionta put the Devils ahead, 3-2, at 3:45 of the third period, but back-to-back, power-play goals by Denis Hamel at 4:56 and 7:51 gave the Phantoms the third-period advantage. Adirondack converted on 3-of-9 power-play opportunities.
"When you have to kill that many penalties it just takes a toll on you," Gionta said. "They had nine opportunities or somewhere around there and it's just hard minutes. It's hard to keep them off the scoreboard when you give them that many opportunities."
Gionta's goal was his 10th of the season. He was joined on the score sheet by Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond and Adam Henrique. Leblond's goal made it 1-1 at 13:40 of the first period and was his fourth goal of the season and third in eight games. J.S. Berube had the helper by creating a turnover in the offensive end.
Henrique gave the Devils a 2-1 advantage at 17:00 of the second thanks to a breakout play by Rob Davison and Matt Anderson. The goal was Henrique's team-leading 21st of the season, tying him with Nick Palmieri for AHL goals by a Devils rookie (starting in 2006-07).
The Phantoms got their first two goals by Ben Holmstrom at 16 seconds of the first period and 55 seconds of the third period. Hamel followed with his pair.
In goal, Jeff Frazee made 28 saves on 34 shots, while Johan Backlund staked the win with 26 stops on 29 shots.
