Northern Colorado Owlz News Release

(Orem, UT) The Grand Junction Rockies (11-10) scored the only run of the game in the first inning as the Owlz (7-14) were shutout for the first time this season, losing the season opener, 1-0.

Grand Junction started the game with three straight hits. After Eddy Diaz was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double, Cristopher Navarro doubled to left. Julio Cerreras drove in the only run of the game, doubling in Navarro, giving the Rockies a 1-0 lead.

The Owlz threatened to tie the game in the fifth inning when Johan Sala doubled with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. Sala was thrown out at the plate on a groundball hit to third off the bat of Anthony Mulrine, keeping the Rockies in front, 1-0.

Trailing by one in the eighth, the Owlz put the first two runners on as Mulrine was hit by a pitch for the seventh time this season and Kevin Arias singled to left. The next three batters were retired in order, leaving the runners at first and second.

Owlz starter Yoel De Leon (0-2) allowed just one run over five innings, tying a career-high with seven strikeouts without issuing a walk but was charged with the loss. Mitchell Kilkenny (1-0) earned the win while Eric Hepple (2) picked up the save.

The Owlz and the Rockies continue the series on Sunday afternoon at 4:00. Clayton Chatham makes the start for the Owlz against Jared Horn for the Rockies. Sunday home games are Bark in the Park presented by K9 Sports Sack and Best Friends. For tickets, visit goowlz.com or call the Owlz at (801)-377-BALL (2255).
