Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL – The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, announced today that infielder Wes Long has been placed on the disabled list due to a left ankle sprain. Filling the vacancy on the Cougars roster, outfielder Javier Herrera has been activated for this afternoon's game when Kane County looks to clip the wings of the South Bend Silver Hawks (Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate) at 4:00 p.m.

Prior to going on the disabled list, Long, 22, anchored the infield at third base in six games for the Cougars. Oakland picked up the Alabama native in the 29th round of last year's June draft, sending him to the Arizona A's (Rookie) to start his professional career. Long slugged an impressive .345 for the A's and led the rookie league with 17 doubles. Named a 2004 post-season All-Star for the Arizona Rookie League, Long also played a short stint with the Vancouver Canadians (Short-A, Northwest).

Ranked the number 3 prospect in the A's minor league system, outfielder Javier Herrera made his mark in the Northwest League in 2004. Signed as a non-drafted free agent in July 2001, Herrera emerged in the professional baseball arena that season in the Dominican Summer League (Rookie) and spent the following year in the Arizona Rookie League. Collecting three NWL Player of the Week (6/20-6/27, 7/19-7/25 & 8/16-8/22) and July Player of the Month honors with the Vancouver Canadians last season, the league MVP slugged a .331 batting average with 12 home runs and 47 RBI.

The Silver Hawks remain in Geneva through Tuesday afternoon, closing the set with an early Noon start. Following a team off-day on Wednesday, April 27, the Cougars take to the road for an eight-game road trip with stops in Peoria (April 28-May 1) and Dayton (May 2 – May 5), to face the Chiefs and Dragons. The team returns to Elfstrom Stadium for another weekend series on May 6 when the Peoria Chiefs (Chicago Cubs affiliate) travel north for a four-game stint.
