Swing Overtake Dragons with Five Run Seventh Inning

Davenport, IA – The Dayton Dragons (4-11) continue to struggle away from Fifth Third Field. The Swing of the Quad Cities (6-8) spotted the Dragons four runs early before coming back with eight unanswered to win the opening game of the four game set 8-5. The loss for Dayton is the sixth in a row for the Miami Valley's team.

Dragons starter Jon George (ND) and Swing starter Kyle McClelland (ND) were locked in a pitcher's duel, a scoreless tie, heading into the Dayton half of the fourth inning. The Quad Cities starter got the first two outs in both the fourth and fifth but could not close Dayton out, which proved to be his demise. Drew Anderson got the Dragons on the board in the fourth with a two out RBI triple into the right field corner that scored Craig Tatum for a 1-0 lead. Tatum got into the RBI act in the fifth with a two out, two RBI double that gave Dayton a 3-0 lead. Habelito Hernandez's run producing single gave the Dragons a 4-0 lead through three and a half innings.

The Swing got a pair off George in the bottom of the fifth inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Matt Sheppard and Joe Mather. The runs would be the only allowed by George who left the game after 5.0 innings of work. The righty allowed seven hits and two runs.

Quad Cities got back in the game against Dayton reliever Philippe Valiquette (LP, 0-2). The Swing struck for five runs in the bottom half of the seventh to take a 7-4 lead. Valiquette got the first out of the inning, before allowing the next five hitters to reach base safely. A bases loaded walk to Mike Ferris forced home a run to make it a 4-3 game. Derry Hammond picked up the big blow with a bases loaded three RBI double to give the Swing a 6-4 lead.

Quad Cities would add another run off Valiquette in the seventh before his day was done. In 1.2 innings the southpaw allowed five runs on two hits with three walks. The lead was pushed to 8-4 with an eighth inning run off Zac Stott (ND).

Kevin Ool (WP, 2-0) tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. Tatum gave the Dragons a glimmer of hope in the top of the ninth with an RBI double off Jaymie Torres (ND). After Torres was lifted leaving runners at first and third, Mike Sillman (SV, 2) recorded the final two outs to pick up the save.

The Dragons and the Swing continue the four game series Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the game live beginning with the pre game show at 2:30 PM. RHP Homer Bailey will get the start for the Dragons, while Quad Cities will counter with RHP Matt Scherer.
