Kernels activate three new players

Three new players will join the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Lansing just in time for the first of four games with the Lugnuts. The roster moves were announced earlier today by Angels Director of Player Development Tony Reagins.

Pitchers Francisco Cordova and Karl Gelinas and utility infielder Jason Ramos will all be active when the Kernels take the field for their 3:05 tilt with the Toronto Blue Jays' newest affiliate. Cordova joins the club from Extended Spring Training while Gelinas comes from AAA Salt Lake and Ramos from AA Arkansas.

A native of San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico, Cordova was 2-5 with a 5.37 ERA for the 2004 Pioneer League champion Provo Angels. He signed with the organization as a free agent on March 3, 2004.

Gelinas joins the Kernels after appearing in three games for the Stingers. He was also a member of the Provo squad in 2004 when he posted a 4-3 mark with a 5.44 ERA. Gelinas attended Northeast Oklahoma A&M and was selected in the 47th round of the 2003 free agent draft. This is his third professional season.

Ramos signed with the Angels in spring training after being released by Boston. He attended St. Petersburg Junior College in St. Petersburg, FL, and was a 28th round pick by the Red Sox in the 2003 June draft. He split time between Lowell and High-A Sarasota last year, appearing in 70 games. He did not see any action while with the Travelers.

To make room for the three new arrivals, the Kernels have placed 1B Clifton Remole (right oblique strain) and RHP Mitch Arnold (medial elbow pain) on the Disabled List. RHP Lenny Morillo has been assigned to Extended Spring Training in Mesa, AZ.
