Bees Fall In Winter-Like Conditions

Ft. Wayne, IN - The Burlington Bees (6-10) committed nine errors and had several misplays in a 12-9 loss to the Ft. Wayne Wizards (9-7) amid snow flurries, freezing temperatures, and high winds at Memorial Stadium tonight. The Bees led twice in the game, but the Wizards were able to come back both times. The Bees are now a season-low four games under .500.

The Bees jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on an RBI single by Rusty Brown in the first and RBI singles from Miguel Vega and Geraldo Valentin in the second. The Wizards struck back with five runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead as the Wizards knocked out six hits and the Bees committed two errors. The Wizards extended the lead to 7-3 with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Wizards got one infield hit in the inning and the Bees committed three more errors.

The Bees came back with three runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Brown, an RBI groundout for Alan Moye, and an RBI double with two outs by Eddie Solis. Wizards starter Mike Ekstrom was finished after five and Jonathan Ellis too over for the sixth. Ellis faced just five batters and allowed three runs. After a walk and a single, Darwinson Salazar singled to right to drive in a run. After a sacrifice bunt by Mario Lisson, Brown doubled off the wall in left to drive in two more. Brown had a season-high four hits, including two doubles, and drove in a season-high four. The Bees had the lead again at 9-7.

Ryan Trytten took over for Ellis and got the next two batters to end the inning. Trytten (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh and became the pitcher of record when the Wizards scored two unearned runs in the sixth to tie the game off of reliever Yovany Damico. A missed popout on the infield led to the two runs. The Wizards got another in the seventh on a throwing error by Ed Lucas at shortstop. The final two runs came in the bottom of the eighth inning on a throwing error my Mario Lisson. Lisson was charged with four errors. Lucas and Valentin each committed two.

Damico (0-1) suffered the loss despite not allowing an earned run. Starter Matt Campbell pitched five innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits while walking three and striking out five. Ricky Steik and Matt Varner finished the game with a scoreless inning apiece to finish the game with Varner earning his fifth save.

The Bees and Wizards will continue this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. RH Billy Buckner (1-2, 3.86) will start for the Bees against RH Clayton Hamilton (2-1, 3.71) for the Wizards. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40.
