Outfielder Godwin Returns at Crucial Time

Central Islip, NY - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs activated outfielder Adam Godwin from the disabled list today. The Alexander City, AL native had been out since June 24th with a strained right thumb after sliding into third base in a game against Long Island.

The loss was a huge blow to the top of the Southern Maryland lineup as Godwin had Godwin was hitting .313 at the time of his injury with a homer and nine RBI. He had been acquired in a trade from the Lancaster Barnstormers on June 3rd for pitcher John Halama. In 20 games with the Blue Crabs, Godwin was hitting .341 and had registered a base hit in 19 of those games.

The timing couldn't be better as the Blue Crabs enter tonight's game against Long Island with only nine player suited to start. The three players on Southern Maryland's bench; third baseman Kody Kirkland, second baseman Brandon Pinckney, and leftfielder Casey Benjamin are all nursing various injuries.

Southern Maryland takes on Long Island in game two of a three-game series tonight at 7:05. The Blue Crabs will send righty Virgil Vasquez (4-5, 4.75 ERA) to the hill against fellow righty Ruddy Lugo (3-1, 5.65 ERA) of the Ducks. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
