EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters captured a series win at home Thursday after splitting a doubleheader against the Windy City ThunderBolts, falling in the first game 3-1 before bouncing back for an 8-5 win in the second game.
In game one, scoreless baseball lasted to the third, when Evansville notched a run with an RBI fielder's choice from Andy Armstrong.
Two home runs in the top of the fourth gave Windy City the separation they needed, as a solo home run from Jarius Richards and a two-run home run from Daryl Myers lifted the ThunderBolts to a 3-1 lead.
No scoring happened the remainder of the game, as Justin Watland and Layne Schnitz-Paxton ended the game solid.
The win went to Kenny Mathews, his second of the season. Watland received his second loss of the season, one out short of a complete game.
Game two started hot for the Otters, as Zach Biermann brought two runs in via a home run to right.
In the third, the Otters added five more runs after an RBI single from J.R. Davis and two-run home runs from Dakota Phillips and Miles Gordon.
Windy City began their offense in the fourth, bringing in a pair on back-to-back RBIs from Jake Boone and Jace Mercer.
A third run scored in the fifth on a solo home run from Payton Robertson, ThunderBolts still trailing, 7-3.
Evansville struck for the final time in the fifth - Andy Armstrong bringing in a run on a fielder's choice.
Windy City managed another two runs in the sixth but were held in the seventh by Logan Sawyer, as the Otters won 8-5.
Ryan O'Reilly finally earned his first win of the season, while Bryan Ketchie fell to 1-2. Sawyer earned his Frontier League-leading seventh save.
With the split, Evansville won the series 2-1, their third straight series victory and fourth of the year.
