May 26, 2005 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release
The Evansville Otters broke out for five runs in the eighth inning to win their first game of 2005, 7-3 over the Chillicothe Paints.
The two teams traded runs in the first inning. The Otters scored when Juan Downing drove in Denver Stuckey with an RBI double. The Paints countered in their half with a leadoff homer by John Ramistella.
Evansville took a 2-1 lead in the third without the benefit of a hit. Frank Scott walked to leadoff the inning. He then took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Stuckey's groundout. Paints starter Matt Blanton then separated his hands from the set position, committing a balk, sending Scott plateward.
Again, the Paints countered in the bottom half of the inning. John Ramistella was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to this on a wild pitch. After Doug Dreher popped out, Adrian Gascon walked and stole second to put runners at second and third with one out. Josh Ury lined a single to right. Ramistella scored, but a strong throw by Josh Wettlaufer was in time and catcher Ricky Clinton withstood a bull rush by Gascon, holding on to the ball for the second out.
Chillicothe took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo homer by Andrew Kasparek.
That would remain the score until the top of the eighth inning when the Otters broke out the lumber. Denver Stuckey reached on an error by Gascon. Juan Downing followed with a single, moving Stuckey to second. Cole Hilt who had just one hit in the series to that point launched a double over the head of the centerfielder to tie the game at 3-3.
With Hilt on second and Downing on third, Brian McKenna gave the Otters their first lead of the season as he doubled off the leftfield wall, scoring both Hilt and Downing. Steve Martin then had a bunt single, which moved McKenna to third. Terrence McClain then grounded out on a nice play by Doug Dreher up the line, but the ball was far enough up the line, moving Martin to second and scoring McKenna to make it 6-3. The Otters would round out the scoring when after Martin stole third, Jason Mann singled in the Otters' centerfielder to make it 7-3 Evansville.
Donny Langdon (1-0) picked up the win for the Otters. Jeremy Durkee (0-1) took the loss for the Paints.
The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. CST. The game can be heard on 91.5 FM, WUEV. Keith Black gets the start for Evansville versus Perry Cunnungham for the Paints.
