Roosters win season opener
May 26, 2005 - Frontier League (FL)
Richmond Roosters News Release
Richmond, Indiana â The Roosters sent the crowd home happy on Wednesday night with a 5-0 win over the Freedom. Matt Schweitzer started the game for the Roosters and dominated on the mound, pitching 7 shutout innings, giving up only three hits, and striking out four to get the win. Schweitzer managed to get out of a sticky situation in the top of the 7th with great defense. Second baseman Hector Urena committed an error with 1 out that allowed Trevor Hall to move to third base. Hall was thrown out at home on the next at bat when Blake Woods quickly fielded a sharp ground ball and made an accurate throw to the catcher. As it turned out, Hall was the closest that any Freedom player made it to home plate.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 7th when Roosters shortstop Josh Hollingsworth launched a solo homerun over the left field wall off starting pitcher Mike Dennison. That homerun turned out to be a precursor of things to come. Tony Sanguinetti hit a grand slam to right-center in the next inning off Florence relief pitcher Lenny Bays and gave the Roosters a 5-0 cushion that was more than enough. Dan Caldwell and Grant Dorn each pitched one inning of relief to hold the score where Schweitzer left it.
On Thursday, the Roosters (1-0) look to win back-to-back games against the Florence Freedom (0-1) and ensure a series win to begin the 2005 season. Over 2,500 area students are scheduled to attend the game for "Baseball in Education Day". First pitch is slated for 10:05am.
