Roosters fall to Florence on Kids Day
May 26, 2005 - Frontier League (FL)
Richmond Roosters News Release
Richmond, Indiana â The game on Thursday might have started early, but it didn't take long for the bats to wake up as the Freedom beat the Roosters 15-8 in front of 3,372 fans at McBride Stadium. Thursday's crowd, the fourth largest in McBride Stadium history, consisted mostly of elementary students as part of "Baseball in Education" Day. A two-run homer from Freedom center fielder Mike Galloway in the first inning opened the scoring. Florence got out to an early seven run lead by the middle of the third inning at 9-2, but Richmond bounced back and narrowed the gap to 12-8 at the end of the eight. The Freedom bats turned out to be too much however as they matched the Roosters with three runs in the top of the ninth and shut out Richmond in the bottom.
The first three batters in the Freedom lineup accounted for 10 of the 15 hits and 11 RBI including four hits and four RBI by the lead off man, Scott Martin. The Roosters had 14 hits, but couldn't get enough of the base runners home, leaving twelve stranded. Mike Reese had four hits and two RBI, while Joe Cuervo and Scott Vetter had two hits and two RBI each.
Mike White started the game for the Roosters but only lasted 2 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and eight runs. Only three of those runs were earned as the Roosters suffered from some shaky defense, committing three errors. Derek Bennett, Fred Moses, and Brian Chapman made relief appearances for the Roosters, but only Moses was able to hold the Freedom scoreless. Jason Sena was the starter for Florence and pitched five strong innings giving up only six hits and two runs, both earned, while picking up the win. Richmond had much more luck against relief pitchers Mike Causey and Steve Boychuck who combined to give up six earned runs over only three innings pitched. Both teams traded runs, but Richmond couldn't manage to make up the early deficit and suffered the defeat that moves them to 1-1 on the year.
The Rooster finish the series with Florence on Friday at 6:35pm before beginning a 15-game, 17-day road trip that visits Washington, Ohio Valley, Chillicothe, Evansville and Florence. Friday night is "Rooster Run" Night with vintage cars and live music at the ballpark. There will also be post-game fireworks to cap off the first home stand of the 2005 season.
