Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - It took two days to complete, but the Evansville Otters (42-27) salvaged a doubleheader split from the Joliet Slammers at 1:53 am CDT on Friday morning at historic Bosse Field.
Joliet won the first game 3-1 on Thursday night and Evansville rebounded to win the final game of the doubleheader 7-5 on Friday morning. After a three hour 12 minute rain delay, game one got underway at 8:47 pm and didn't end until 11:04 pm. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader began at 11:33 pm and didn't wrap up until Friday well after midnight.
Joliet leapt ahead 3-0 in game one of the doubleheader. The Slammers scored twice in the fourth inning and another run in the fifth for the advantage.
Evansville plated a run in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Phillip Wilson and got the tying run to the plate with a single from Shayne Houck. But former Otters pitcher David Kubiak struck out first baseman Nik Balog to complete the game one victory.
RHP Trevor Walch (5-1) took the loss despite a complete game and 9 strikeouts (one shy of career high).
Evansville also trailed 2-0 in game two before a Josh Allen two-run single tied the game in the fourth. The Otters then scored five runs in the sixth including a go-ahead two-run base hit from Jeremy Nowak to right field.
Trailing 7-2 in the seventh, Joliet got a lead-off home run from Adrian English and then rallied to force a save situation. Nearing 2 am locally, Evansville turned to closer Eric Massingham who allowed a two-run double to Matt Weaver before getting Adam Giacalone to ground out and end the doubleheader.
Otters game two starter Jose Velez struck out a career-high nine batters in 4.0 innings, but received the no-decision.
The final game of the series is later on Friday night at Bosse Field. It is St. Mary's night at the ballpark with a special first pitch delivery from a helicopter, 500 bike helmet giveaway and postgame fireworks. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm CDT. Fans can call 812-435-8686 to purchase tickets. The game will be broadcast live on WUEV 91.5 FM with the pregame show starting at 6:15 pm CDT.
