Evansville Otters News Release
Crestwood, IL - For the third time in as many games, the Otters mounted a late comeback only to fall just short, losing 7-6 to the Windy City Thunderbolts Sunday at Standard Bank Stadium.
Windy City used a home run from Bryan Cook and a three hit night from Kraig Binick to take a 7-0 lead to the top of the eighth inning.
Thunderbolts' starter Matt Jernstad had frustrated Otters hitters for seven innings. He had a no hitter going with two outs in the sixth when Jeremy Strack doubled. With Jernstad scheduled to go on three days rest to start on Thursday against division leading Southern Illinois, he was not brought out to begin the eighth inning. That task fell to right hander David Triplet, who gave up a triple to Marcus Rose sandwiched between two walks. Triplet was removed and replaced by left hander Tim Dennehy. Strack hit a sacrifice fly to bring the Otters within 7-3. Luke Hetherington then reached on an error and took second base on a wild pitch. Frank Meade singled him in to cut the deficit to 7-4, chasing Dennehy. Right hander Brandon Garner came on and walked Cameron Satterwhite and gave up a single to Greg Alexander to load the bases with one out. Garner then walked Eric Blackwell to force in a run and make it a 7-5 game. 'Bolts manager Tommy Thompson called on closer Nick Hall, who had tossed 1 2/3 innings the night before. Hall surrendered an infield single to Kenny Gilbert to cut the deficit to one, but Travis McCleary struck out and Andre Liscinsky grounded out to end the inning.
The Otters would have another chance in the ninth inning though, when Hetherington walked with one out and stole second. Hetherington was picked off of second base though and Frank Meade grounded out on the next pitch to end the game.
Jernstad (6-4) earned the win. Otters' starter Kyle Dahman (1-4) lasted 3 2/3 innings, surrendering six runs (all earned) on ten hits. Hall picked up his second five out save in as many nights, his tenth of the year.
With the loss the Otters have lost a season-high nine games. They'll look to break the skid Tuesday at River City at 7:05pm CDT.
