Erie Otters News Release

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League selected Christian Olsen Seest with their second and final pick (72nd overall) this evening in the 2005 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft held today via the Internet and conference call. Seest, a 6-foot-3 and 197-pound native of Demark who has represented his country in the last two World Under-18 Hockey Championships, played last season with Malmo of the Swedish Junior League. "Christian has great size and pro upside," said Otters General Manager and Managing Partner Sherwood Bassin. "He's a power forward who's willing to get involved and get his nose dirty and he likes the North American game."

The Otters moved from the 86th overall pick to the 72nd as a result of CHL teams meeting their quota of two European players during the course of the selection process. In the first round the Otters took Russian defenseman Ivan Maximkin from Lada Togliatti with the 28th overall selection. The 17 year-old defender, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 190 pounds, played for the Russian Under-17 Team at the Four Nations Cup held in Rochester, NY in November. Maximkin is eligible for the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft. All 58 teams in the Canadian Hockey League took part in the draft. The Ottawa 67's selected Czech defenseman Jakub Vojta with the first overall selection. Swedish forward Nicklas Bergfors went second overall to the expansion St. John's Fog Devils of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League rounded out the top three by selecting Czech forward Petr Kalus.

The Otters begin their 10th Anniversary Season in the Ontario Hockey League with what has become a traditional season-opening trip through Northern Ontario. The Otters face the Sudbury Wolves in their 2005-2006 season opener on Friday, September 23rd followed by a stop in Sault Ste. Marie to take on the Greyhounds on Sunday, September 25th. The Otters will return to the Tullio Arena for their 2005-2006 Home Opener, exactly 10 years to the day of their first ever regular season home game when they face off against the Plymouth Whalers on Thursday, September 29th. Game time is 7:30 p.m. with 10th Anniversary Pre-game Celebrations scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
