Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Edgar Osuna's pitching mates needed another pick-me-up, and for his second straight outing, the left-hander from Mazatlan, Mexico did not disappoint.
Osuna (2-2) pitched seven strong innings, a season-high for a Pelicans pitcher, allowing just one run while scattering six hits as the Pelicans salvaged the series finale of a three-game set with the Lynchburg Hillcats 4-1.
Lynchburg did strike first in the final game of the three-game set. Leading off the third inning, Maiko Loyola singled, advancing to third on back-to-back groundouts by Eddie Prasch and Alex Presley before scoring on a Ray Chang double. The rally was all Osuna would surrender on the evening.
For the second straight outing, Osuna did not issue a single walk. The left-hander has not walked a batter since his April 19 start against the Potomac Nationals. Four out of his eight strikeouts were of the looking variety as the southpaw kept Lynchburg's potent offense off-balance throughout his seven innings.
Myrtle Beach's offense came alive with the help of a Major League All-Star in the bottom of the third against Lynchburg starter Paul Mildren (1-3). Brian McCann, making his second start as designated hitter for the Pelicans in his rehab stint with the club, doubled in his first at-bat in the first inning and then walked with two outs in the third. That set up Cody Johnson's Carolina League-leading eighth home run, the slugger's second in as many nights. Donell Linares followed with one of his own, pulling a drive into the Land Shark Landing bleachers in left field. It marked the second time the Pelicans have hit back-to-back home runs this year. Mildren was charged with four runs on eight hits over five innings while suffering the loss.
In the fifth, the Birds picked up an insurance run when Michael Fisher singled with one out and came around to score on McCann's second double of the night.
Myrtle Beach's bullpen, which has been taxed by starting pitching struggles thus far in 2009, only had to trot out a pair of relievers for an inning each. Cory Gearrin worked a perfect eighth, striking out two, and the bespectacled Tommy Palica (S,1) converted his first save opportunity of the season in the ninth.
After an offday tomorrow, the Pelicans open May with the back end series of their six-game homestand when the Salem Red Sox. Jeff Locke toes the rubber for Myrtle Beach in his first start since carrying a no-hitter into the seventh last time out against the same Red Sox. First pitch for Friday night's series opener is at 7:05. Tickets are still available by calling the Pelicans box office at (843) 918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com
