Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Kinston, NC- When Matt McBride scores more runs than your entire team, it does not bode well in your pursuit of victory.
The Red Sox fell 7-2 to the Indians on Wednesday afternoon in front of 2,569 at Historic Grainger Stadium, with McBride leading the way with two homers, three hits, four RBI. McBride also crossed the plate three times as Kinston rode another fine pitching performance to their 11th victory of the season. With the win, the Indians (11-9) move past the Sox (10-10) into first place in the Carolina League South.
Salem mustered just three hits for the second straight day as the offensive slump continued. In the past five games, the Red Sox have scored only ten runs. Not so coincidentally, Salem has dropped four of the last five following a six-win in seven-game stretch that vaulted them into first place last week.
Salem starter Seth Garrison was dominant out of the gates, striking out the side in the first inning, all on swinging third strikes. Garrison surrendered a run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning, though, which progressed into a three-run third for the K-Tribe. The Indians used a Jered Stanley fielding error and a walk to put two runners on with one away. McBride came to bat and blasted an 0-2 curveball over the left field wall for his fourth round tripper of the season, making the score 4-0.
The Red Sox cut the deficit in half with their only two runs of the ballgame in the top of the fifth. Salem also used an error and a walk to put two on with one out. Luis Segovia drove in Zak Farkes from second with an RBI double, moving Matt Sheely to third. Che-Hsuan Lin's sacrifice fly scored Sheely to make the score 4-2, however the Red Sox threat ended when Kris Negron grounded out to finish the frame.
Kinston starter Ryan Morris did not allow an earned run in six strong innings, picking up his first victory of the season with just three hits allowed and two unearned runs against his stat line. Chen-Chang Lee tossed two scoreless innings with two Ks in the seventh and eighth, while Garrison Campfield whiffed the side in the ninth to finalize the result.
With a 4-2 lead in the fifth, the Indians broke it open with back-to-back homers. First, Lonnie Chisenhall ended Garrison's outing with a two run mammoth blast to left-center field, his fourth of the season. After a pitching change brought Kyle Fernandes into the contest, he was greeted by the second McBride dinger on the day, a solo shot that made it 7-2. It was McBride's 25th RBI on the season in 20 games, most in the Carolina League.
Josh Papelbon pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Salem to keep the deficit at five, however, the Sox did not record a hit after the fifth inning. Kinston pitching retired 14 of the final 15 Red Sox batters in the ballgame.
Back at the .500 mark and mired in their first three-game losing streak of the season, Salem aims at salvaging the final contest of the three game series tomorrow evening. Salem's Dave McKae opposes Kinston's Ryan Miller in a 7:00 PM start.
