Myrtle Beach salvages a win in series finale to avoid a Lynchburg sweep

Myrtle Beach defeated the Hillcats 4-1 on Wednesday night to spoil Lynchburg's bid for a series sweep. The Hillcats return home to open a seven-game homestand, beginning with a three-game weekend series against the Kinston Indians. Game one is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start on Friday night.
The Hillcats seized the early advantage by scoring a run in the top of the third. Maiko Loyola led off the inning with a single. Consecutive groundouts by Eddie Prasch and Alex Presley enabled Loyola to advance from first to third. Ray Chang delivered an RBI double that plated Loyola and put the Hillcats in front 1-0.
Unfortunately for Lynchburg, Myrtle Beach wasted no time in answering as the Pelicans posted three runs in the bottom of the frame. Following a two-out walk to Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann, who was playing the second game of a scheduled two-game injury rehab assignment with Myrtle Beach, Hillcats starter Paul Mildren surrendered a two-run home run to Cody Johnson. Donell Linares followed Johnson's homer with a solo shot that cleared the left-field wall and gave the Pelicans a 3-1 advantage.
Myrtle Beach tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the fifth. After Cole Miles singled to lead off the inning, Michael Fisher connected with a double that allowed Miles to score from first and extend Myrtle Beach lead to 4-1.
A three-run lead was enough for Pelicans starter Edgar Osuna, who limited the Hillcats to six hits and one run in seven innings of work while fanning eight Lynchburg hitters. Cory Gearrin and Thomas Palica each worked a scoreless inning to preserve the Myrtle Beach victory.
Osuna (2-2) earned the win while Mildren (1-3) took the loss for Lynchburg. Despite the setback, Lynchburg finished the seven-game road trip with a solid 4-3 record, highlighted by winning two of the three games at Myrtle Beach.
Lynchburg returns home on Friday night for game one of a three-game set with the Kinston Indians at 7:05 p.m. at City Stadium. Right-hander Matt McSwain takes the mound for Lynchburg. The game marks the start of a seven-game homestand, which features a plethora of promotions. Friday's game is mousepad giveaway night. The first 1,000 fans to enter City Stadium will receive a Hillcats mousepad, compliments of Express Lane, Computer Exchange and WLNI-FM.
