Orlando City Drops First Road Decision of the Year at Montréal
May 7, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Orlando City SC News Release
MONTRÉAL, QC. - Orlando City SC (5-4-2, 17 points) dropped a 4-1 decision at CF Montréal (5-3-2, 17 points) on Saturday afternoon at Stade Saputo in what served as the Lions' first road defeat of the year.
João Moutinho netted his second goal of the campaign in the match, while Jake Mulraney made his Orlando City debut after being acquired via trade from Atlanta United earlier in the week, entering the match in the 57th minute for Benji Michel.
The match also saw Thomas Williams record his first MLS start at the back, going the full 90 for Oscar Pareja's side.
Head Coach Oscar Pareja:
"For us we faced a team that had a lot of initiatives going forward and we couldn't first get the ball back and second we didn't create much. There was a point in the second half where we woke up a bit and started being more of ourselves, but it just came out that way with mistakes that just allowed them to score the goals and kept them away from a better performance. A very favorable result for Montréal and we're going to push forward for better results."
Scoring Recap:
21' Joel Waterman - MTL 1, ORL 0
The home side took the early lead with Joel Waterman jumping on a loose ball in the area from a CF Montréal corner kick, tapping in the finish from close range.
52' Djordje Mihailovic (Alistair Johnston, Joaquín Torres) - MTL 2, ORL 0
Montréal added another with Joaquín Torres slotting a ball through for Alistair Johnston on the right flank, who sent a ball across the face of goal for Djordje Mihailovic for the finish.
72' João Moutinho (Mauricio Pereyra) - MTL 2, ORL 1
The Lions halved the deficit off a corner of their own, with Mauricio Pereyra sending in a ball from the left side of the pitch to find the head of João Moutinho for his second finish of the year.
81' Joaquín Torres (Zachary Brault-Guillard, Joel Waterman) - MTL 3, ORL 1
Montréal retaliated in the 81st minute with Joaquín Torres, firing the ball into the net after some combination play between Zachary Brault-Guillard and Joel Waterman.
84' Zachary Brault-Guillard (Joaquín Torres) - MTL 4, ORL 1
The scorer on Montréal's third goal turned provider three minutes later, providing the assist to Zachary Brault-Guillard in the 84th minute.
Match Notes:
João Moutinho scored his second goal of the campaign in what serves as his third as a Lion in all competitions.
Mauricio Pereyra extended his own Club assist record on the afternoon, sending in the corner that led to Moutinho's finish. The Lions' captain now sits with 28 assists in all competitions.
Thomas Williams recorded his first start in MLS play, getting the nod at center back at Stade Saputo after coming off the bench in his prior two appearances in league action.
Jake Mulraney made his Orlando City debut in the match, entering the game in the 57th minute for Benji Michel. Mulraney was acquired by the Lions this past week via trade with Atlanta United.
Sebastián Méndez tallied his 75th appearance as a Lion in all competitions.
Head Coach Oscar Pareja made three changes to his starting lineup ahead of the match, with Williams, Méndez and Alexandre Pato all featuring in the first XI.
Next Match: The Lions make a quick trip home, set to face the Philadelphia Union in the Round of 32 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 10 in a 7 p.m. ET kickoff at Exploria Stadium.
