Opening Night Roster Announced

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls, who begin their second season in the ECHL on Friday, announced their opening night roster. Some 20 players made the team, which includes 11 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders.

Returning to the Blue and Orange from last season are forwards Mark Pederson, Sylvain Deschatelets, Billy Tibbets, Darren Partch and Brian Gornick; defensemen Mike Garrow and Evgueni Nourislamov and goaltender Trevor Koenig. San Diego has 12 new players this season.

The Gulls opening night roster is as follows:

Goaltenders (2): Koenig and Mathieu Chouinard.

Defensemen: (7): Andrew Canzanello, Ian Forbes, Garrow, Nourislamov, Jonathon Shockey, Sean Murphy and Nikita Korovkin.

Forwards: (11): Max Birbraer, Darren Clark, Deschatelets, Colin Embley, Guillaume Fournier, Gornick, Sean O'Connor, Partch, Pederson, Colin Shields and Tibbetts.

Of the 20 players, four are veterans (Koenig, Pederson, Shockey and Tibbetts) and four are rookies (Canzanello, Fournier, Murphy and Shields). Deschatelets, recovering from off-season wrist surgery, will begin the season on the 30-day injured list. Veterans are players who enter the 2004-05 season having played at least 288 professional games. Rookies are players who enter the 2004-05 season having played fewer than 25 professional games.

The Gulls open the season Friday on the road against the Long Beach Ice Dogs, with game-time scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The home opener is Saturday against the Fresno Falcons at 7:05 p.m. Rally towels, brought to you by ROCK 101 KGB (101.5 FM), will be presented to first 10,000 fans in attendance.
