Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Bakersfield Condors of the West Coast Hockey League held two events to benefit charity this week with the Open House/Family Day on Sunday at Centennial Garden and the 5th Annual Condors Charity Invitational at Rio Bravo Country Club on Monday.

The Open House was sponsored by KGET-TV 17 and was the season ticket holders ' first chance to pick up their season ticket books. It was also the first opportunity to see the new team on the ice, as the Condors held a split-squad scrimmage for the fans. Admission to the event was free with the donation of a canned food item. A total of 1,001 pounds of canned goods was collected and donated to the Golden Empire Gleaners, who organize a food bank that services Kern County. In addition, the Houchin Blood Mobile was on hand at the Open House, collecting needed supplies from donors.

Monday's charity golf tournament was sponsored by KERN 1410 and was presented by Chicago Title and Baldwin-Georgenton Insurance. The event featured over 110 golfers, and included foursomes matched up with at least one member of the 2002-03 Condors squad. Funds were raised through sponsorships, entry fees, a mulligan sale and a raffle for donated prizes held during the post-tournament banquet. In total, more than $3,500 was raised to benefit the Alliance Against Family Violence.

The winning group included former Condors defenseman Kevin Barrett, as well as Mark Carroll, Dave Peterson, Ted Nicholas and Condors rookie defenseman Peter McRae.

"The response from these two events was fantastic," said Condors President & GM Matthew Riley. "The Open House and the golf tournament have become annual events and kick off the season on a positive note. We're happy we could make these contributions to the Golden Empire Gleaners and the Alliance Against Family Violence. Our thanks go out to the sponsors and the participants who helped make them both a success."
