TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: First of home and home preseason series vs. the Express. Game will be played at SkateNation plus and is open to season ticket holders only on a first come first serve basis. âGades were 0-1-1 vs. the Express in the preseason last year. Richmond was 4-5-1 vs. the Express last season. Richmond lost 3-2 in overtime to the Express here last year and was thumped 6-3 at Roanoke in preseason play. Clubs will meet again tomorrow night at 7 PM at the Ice Station in Roanoke (6:55 internet only broadcast at www.renegades.com). Clubs will clash 10 times in the regular season. First regular season meeting vs. the Express is November 15 in Richmond.
âGADES NOTES: Richmond was 1-1-1 in preseason play last season. The âGades did not loose a preseason game from 1998 until last year. The âGades have 17 players in camp, nine forwards, six defensemen, and two goalies. The âGades have signed veteran defenseman Milt Mastad. He is due to report later in the week. Richmond received three players from Norfolk's camp over the weekend: Ian Turner, Scott Crawford, and Alex Matieroukine. 11 players who have signed with Richmond are still away at AHL camps. Rookie defenseman Kerry Ellis-Toddington suffered a minor injury at Vancouver's NHL camp. He is expected to report later in the week. Jamie Herrington opened this season at the New York Rangers camp. Former Renegades defenseman Darren Wetherill is in camp on a tryout basis. The âGades have two Richmond products in camp: RW J.R. Jarelle and G Bobby Dillon. Both goalies (Dillon and Ryan Honick) have only emergency back-up experience as pros. Goalie Marc Magliarditi is expected to attend camp with Cleveland of the AHL before reporting to Richmond. Rookie goalie Dan Lombard is in camp with Portland and is expected to play in the Pirates preseason game tonight. Four members of last year's Richmond team have seen playing time in NHL preseason games. Rastislav Stana, Krys Barch, and Graham Mink all saw action with Washington last week. Mike Siklenka has played in two games with the Flyers. The âGades have only three returnees from last year's club in camp (Dan Vandermeer, Brian Goudie, and Lars Pettersen). Nine of the 17 âGades now in camp have no North American pro experience. Former Renegade David Cunniff has joined the Cleveland Barons as an assistant coach.
EXPRESS NOTES: Roanoke opened training camp with 10 skaters. Former Renegade Frank Novock is back with the Express. Former âGade Dylan Gyori is expected to open the season in Roanoke. He is in camp with Hershey. Roanoke has 13 players in AHL camps. The Express is in the first year of an affiliation with the Chicago Blackhawks and Norfolk Admirals. The Express training camp roster now stands at 20 with eight players back from last season. The Express opens the season October 11 at Atlantic City.

NEXT UP: The âGades and Express meet again tomorrow night at the Ice Station in Roanoke (7 PM). The âGades close preseason play Saturday at the Vineland Ice Arena vs. Atlantic City at 7 PM (internet only broadcast at 6:55). The âGades open regular season play at Trenton October 11. Richmond opens at home Friday, October 18 vs. Charlotte at 7:35.
