West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

DAYTON, OH - After holding a slim lead through the first five innings, the Whitecaps gave up three runs on a play that began with a two-run single and lost the season opener at Dayton, 3-2.

Deik Scram led off the season with a single for West Michigan and was followed by a double from Scott Sizemore. Scram crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Brennan Bosch to give the Whitecaps a 1-0 advantage in the first inning.

Chris Cody threw five shutout innings as the West Michigan starter and Ryan Strieby led off the sixth inning with a towering home run down the right field line to double the lead to 2-0.

However, in the bottom of the sixth, Josh Rainwater allowed two walks and a two-out, two run single by Drew Stubbs. Following a throw home by left fielder Jeramy Laster that nearly nabbed the second runner to score on the play, catcher Jeff Kunkle threw to second in an unsuccessful attempt to retire Stubbs. On the throw to second, Tony Esquer scored after beginning the play at first base.

Esquer proved to be the winning run.

Rainwater went on to pitch 2.2 innings, but took the loss. Casey Fien made his Whitecaps debut and struck out the only batter he faced in relief of Rainwater.
